There are about 3,500 species of Mosquitoes worldwide with around 170 species in the United States and around 55 different species in Texas that buzz, bite and irritate you. Adult mosquitoes can reach a size of about 1/4 inch with compound eyes, antennae and female mosquitoes have a proboscis which is what you feel when they feed on your blood. Females usually must feed for a blood meal to develop eggs. All mosquitoes will feed on nectar and plant juices but only females feed on blood.
Mosquitoes will mostly feed on people with type O blood, people that are heavy breathers as they are attracted to carbon dioxide, people with skin bacteria, people with a high body temperature or pregnant women. Mosquitoes like standing water, plants on still water and soil that is subject to flooding. Eggs may hatch depending on variety from 16-24 hours to 2 years.
Mosquitoes may transmit diseases such as; West Nile, Zika, Malaria, Yellow Fever, Denge, Encephalitis etc.
