Chinch bugs vary in color from a dark red to brown and have white wings and red legs. Adult chinch bugs can grow to almost 3/16 of an inch long. Young chinch bugs are mostly bright red and are half the size of adults.
Chinch bugs feed on grasses and suck the sap out of the plants. When the grasses become dry they move on to other plants.
Southern Chinch bugs primarily feed on St.Augustine grass. The injury to the grass will appear as yellow drought or heat spots in the yard. Most common infections are seeen in July and August.
