An Asp is a stinging caterpillar and known in Texas as a Flannel Southern Moth or Puss Moth Caterpillar. The caterpillar stage of the Flannel Moth have very fine hairs and spines with venom. When touched by human skin the asp produces a painfull rash or sting. The caterpillars are shaped like a teardrop and infest shade trees and shrubs around your house, parks and schools.
Adult moths appear in spring and early summer and lay eggs on shrubs and trees. Brushing up against the asp or caterpillar will cause intense pain. Blood colored spots may appear. An ice pack will help relieve the pain and antihistamines can help with the burning and itching. Spines from the asp may stick in the skin and tape might be needed to help pull them out. If you are allergic to insect bites you may need to call your physician.
